SFEC is partnering with the UMN Forest Resources Department and Minnesota Forest Resources Council to present emerging research on relationships between forest management and carbon storage and sequestration here in Minnesota as part of a day-long symposium. The event will feature the research included in the December 2024 report Estimating Current and Future Carbon Stocks and Emissions in Minnesota Forests and Forest Products under Multiple Management Scenarios.

This event is designed for forest policy makers, practicing natural resource managers, and others with a professional interest in carbon sequestration and storage. Like the report itself, the event will primarily address forest carbon dynamics at the statewide level, but will also include discussions of site-level silvicultural practices.

Speakers and presentations):

  • John Zobel (UMN-Forest Resources): Overview of the 2025 Forest Carbon Report
  • Matt Russell (Arbor Analytics): Forest Carbon Basics and Modeling Methods Used in the Report
  • Maureen Puettmann (CORRIM): Lifecycle Analysis and Forest Carbon in Wood Products
  • David Wilson (MN Forest Resources Council): Tying it All Together, Key Practical Takeaways from the Report
  • Marcella Windmuller-Campione (UMN-Forest Resources): Insights and limitations on using statewide silvicultural analyses to inform site-level work
  • Panel discussion facilitated by Eli Sagor (UMN-Cloquet Forestry Center): Putting This New Knowledge to Work on the Ground
