The Wabasha Forestry Committee is pleased to announce the 49th Annual Forestry Day, “Looking Forward.” There will be fabulous and not-so-fabulous prizes. You must be present to win. We look forward to seeing you on Friday, February 13th, 2026 at the Front Porch Bar & Grill at 100 N Sheppard St Kellogg for the indoor presentation. Registration begins at 8:30 am. There will be coffee, doughnuts and other morning refreshments available. Programming begins at 9:15am and ends at 3:30pm. The Wabasha County Outstanding Woodland Manager of the Year will be awarded before lunch.
Our first speaker of the day is Christopher Rand, WNB Financial, discussing estate planning and considerations for land and assets. We will then move upwards and onwards with Angela Gupta, UMN Extension Forester, who will offer insight on both native and non-native vines, why they may appear more abundant and ideas on when and how they can be managed.
Jeremy Corrigan, Nutrien Ag Solutions, will speak on what to consider and know when using herbicides and surfactants. The focus will primarily be on woody species management and control. Aishwarya Veerabahu, UW Madison, is sharing her research on the Golden Oyster Mushroom, and how the tasty invader has become prevalent in the Upper Midwest and its implications on forest health and mycology.
Sascha Lodge, Terrestrial Invasive Species Program Coordinator with Minnesota DNR's Division of Forestry, will present an overview of the many different methods for buckthorn management. She will touch on logistics, costs and highlight different situations where given methods may be most appropriate. Sascha has coordinated invasive plant management on state forest lands since 2019. She holds a PhD in forest ecology.
Following Sascha, we will have members of the Blanchette Forest Pathology UMN Laboratory, Ryan Franke and Colin Peters who will introduce their research developing fungal biological controls for buckthorn and the emerald ash borer, respectively. Nick Rajtar, PhD. will discuss the Blanchette lab's state-wide biosurveillance program for invasive tree pathogens. This will be a panel discussion and Q&A session. Bring your questions!
Johnny Micheel, Chimney Rock Forestry, will round out the day to provide a boots-on-the-ground approach to land management, getting started with a plan, management tools (equipment, grazing, prescribed fire, etc.), site considerations and share his perspectives as a contractor and landowner in SE MN.
There is a cost to attend. That fee is used to off-set costs for the event. Lunch will be a pasta bar, soup and salad. This meal has a vegetarian option. We cannot accommodate gluten free because the kitchen is not gluten free. If you are planning to attend please reserve your space by February 3rd to help us for meal planning, printing and setting up. You can show up on the day of the event and still attend. To reserve your space please contact the DNR Office in Lake City at 651-299-4014, scan the QR code or contact Jen Wahls.
